Golf Inc. July/August 2019:
CREATING A HOME away from home is a common goal in the private club community. Sometimes, though, designers forget to account for younger members of the families who will be using that home. At Reunion Golf & Country Club in Madison, Miss., the whole family was the focus for the new clubhouse, said General Manager Casey Smith.
“If you look at our social calendar, it’s really designed for families,” he said. “Many evenings we have events going on for adults and kids at the same time. That’s what the clubhouse really complements. There’s casual dining, a la carte dining, a golf lounge designed just for our golf membership to have an adults-only area.”
Among the amenities in the clubhouse is a kids corner, where arts and craft s programs are offered, and a pizza pub, where the cooking area is visible from the dining room so children can watch their dinner being prepared.
The design was inspired by an 1846 Italianate house on the club grounds that serves as the club’s welcome center. The exterior of the clubhouse draws on antebellum themes, with a covered veranda and large columns supporting the roof.
The building was designed to maximize sunlight in the winter months and reduce exposure in the summer, thereby reducing energy use. Dry food storage is in the basement to provide a more consistent temperature throughout the year and minimize climate-control requirements. Low-flow water fixtures are used throughout the 33,000-square-foot building, and water-harvesting systems are in place on the grounds to take advantage of the area’s 50- to-75 inches of annual rainfall.
WHAT THE JUDGES SAID:
“The clubhouse is inviting from all angles. The outdoor space is perfect for a multitude of events, and the interiors are a home run. Classic design without being overstated.” —Golf, Inc. | July/August 2019 | 2019 Clubhouse of the Year, Private Club, New Construction
